My Take on Life & Death

“Life is uncertain
as a flame of a candle,
which can be blown
off any time,
by the wind.”

These are the lines from my poem “Life” which I had composed in 1997. I had read somewhere that “Nothing is certain or permanent in life, except taxes and death.” Yesterday, I read the same line again in Jessica’s story “A Positive Test”. How true it is ! What does life mean to me ? I will answer this later, shall I ? “Life is a journey.” Someone said. “Life is an interval between birth and death” another said. There is one famous line which goes something like this “Life is a tale from the mouth of an idiot.” These are some lines on life.

“Life is like
a marathon race
with many hurdles,
It requires much hard work
to win the race.”

I believe hard work combined with with some luck can bring you whatsoever you desire to achieve. Some people may say that luck plays a very important role in life. Just think, if a person had all the luck but didn’t try then would he achieve what he desires ? I don’t think so. For example, a person seated under an apple tree and wishes one of the apples to land into his hands. Do you think his luck would bring him down one apple ? No. He has to climb the tree and pluck one apple. Luck is something like getting an apple tree with lots of ripe apples. But you need to do some hard work to get those apples. The hard work here however is climbing the apple tree and plucking them. It’s as simple as that.

“Life is like a growing
plant into a tree,
so tall;
which can give many
shade and fruits
of taste.”

We have to take a leaf or two from nature. Just think about one tree. It gives us fruits, shade, wood to make furnitures and for fire. A tree never lives for itself but for others. In fact, it takes in carbon-di-oxide and gives us fresh air or oxygen to breath. It is one perfect example to show that we should live for others. Life can be a happy journey, if we not just think about ourselves but others too. What I have realised down the years is that the joy of giving is better and more satisfying than the joy of receiving. Even Bible says - “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

What do we lose by helping others and those in need , when we are in a position to do it ? I am one such person who cannot see pain in others. I can suffer, but I cannot see pain in others. Especially, those whom I know well. Of course, manytimes strangers too. Yes, sometimes I have given a deaf ear to those in need. That is the time I hate myself for doing so.I always wish and pray to God and seek his blessings to be able to perform well and be a good human being.

Many a times, I pray for the well being of the worldly people. It may sound strange, but I do. I was surprised to find that one of my friends does that too. So I am lucky that I am not just alone. I don’t want to prove to others how good I am. I just want to be what I am and always try to be a better person than what I am. Well, whatever I have done for others is too little. In fact, I don’t like to talk about it. I have bigger and better plans and hope God listens to my prayers.In the world, there are all kinds of people. We need both good and bad. Because, without bad there would be no meaning for goodness.Do you agree with me ?

“Life is like a doll
made out of clay,
with strain;
which can be shaped
as we like and
can be fine !”

Though destiny plays an important role in our lives. But one thing I have realised is that we are what we think we are. If you think you’re beaten in life, so would you be. One important thing required in life to survive is ‘Fighting Spirit’. Winning and loosing dosen’t matter, as long as we have the fighting spirit in us.We need to keep fighting and never give up ! Yes, given the limitations or restrictions in our lives, we can shape our lives the way we want to, with our hard work.Here I would like to tell you a short story that I had read recently. I know we all love stories, including me and we take examples better with moral stories,right ?

One fine day a farmer’s donkey fell down into an old well. The animal cried helplessly for hours as the farmer tried to find out what to do. Finally he felt that the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway. Hence it just was not worth to save the donkey. He invited his neighbours to help him.
They grabbed a shovel and began to throw mud into the well.

At first, the donkey realised what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he quietened down. A few minutes later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of the mud that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He shook it off and took a step up.

Soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and walked off !
Life is going to shovel all kinds of mud on you. The trick to getting out of the problem is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by never giving up !

I thought it was a nice little story hence I wanted to share it with you.

“Life is like a reflecting
mirror on the wall,
Which can reflect
our deeds of
present and past.”

I believe we go and come back again. There are some amazing reincarnation cases which couldn’t be proved as hoax, sceintifically. When we go and come back, then our ‘deeds’ does matter. The deeds of our past life decide our present and our deeds of present decide the future to come.

What is success ?
Success is speaking words of praise.
In cheering other people’s ways;
In doing just the best you can;
With every task and every plan.
It is silence when your
speech would hurt,
Politeness when your
neighbor is hurt.
It is deafness when scandal flows;
And sympathy with others’ woes.
It is loyalty when duty calls
It is courage when disaster falls,
It is patience when the
hours are long;
It is found in laughter and in song.
It is in the silent time of prayer
In happiness and in despair,
In all of life and nothing less
We call it success.

Nothing in this world was ever accomplished without a living faith. It is also said, genius is the gold mine ; talent is the miner who works and brings it out. Success will come running towards you, if you are committed to succeeding ! Also think it is impossible to fail, it will lead you to success. Belief leads us to success in life, and success is maintained through faith and confidence in oneself and the faith in the almighty. I also believe in though time dosen’t last long, but tough people do. I also believe in there is no alternative for hardwork.

“Death is like a dried leaf
rustling down a big Banyan tree,
So every thing that takes birth
has to die one fine day, you see. ”

The truth is everything that takes birth has to die one fine day. There is nothing as wonderful as death. I would love to die one fine day. But I cannot bare to see people close to me die. When my grandfather, whom I loved very much, passed away, I was too small to even understand death. I wondered why he was sleeping so long and why others didn’t wake him up ? Finally, someone told me that he is not going to wake up again and that they are going to burry him.

I was surprised and shocked at the same time. When I was 14 years, my father who went to work and his lifeless body was brought home in the afternoon. My world was shattered. I thought my father would be around to see me grow up and then I would take care of him in his old age. But that was not be so.

“I came here
empty handed,
So shall I go. ”

We are all characters in this world, which can be compared with one big stage. We all have to go when our play ends and the curtains come down. Maybe we come back to be a part of another play. Many of us forget one basic rule and that is, we come here empty handed and so shall we go. What remains is our deeds, either good or bad or both and the memories in the minds of the people close to us. We become selfish and make so much wealth that not just lasts for one birth, but for 5 or 6 generations to come. Some even could say that they are making their children, grand children and great grand children’s life comfortable. What we don’t think is that we may end up making our offsprings more lasier than comfortable.

Though I have thought some answers in my mind, but I need the confirmation of the same. Well, it could be answered after I meet death. Where do we go after we die ? Is there something called ‘Heaven’ and ‘Hell’ ?
or is it only our sheer imagination ? Yes, one person can answer all the questions and he is none other than the Lord. Yes, I would love to meet him face to face one fine day. Do we have to die for that ? Surely he is the person worth dying for.

Why did Lord or God create all this in the first place ? Maybe, he was feeling lonely and he needed something to keep his attention or he needed something to keep himself pre-occupied. Just like we need entertainment in our lives. Do you agree with me ? That’s just my viewpoint.

Sometimes, I even go to the extent of thinking ‘ Why am I on Earth ? ‘ I am still searching for an answer. I may soon find the answer sooner or later or maybe, I may not. I just don’t want to be another person who adds years to his or her life. There is no point in living a hundred years doing nothing at all.
As it is not how long you live matters, but how you live does !

So living even a fifty years and achieving something great would be fine. Something that will make your name to be remembered long after you are gone. But then how many of us are lucky to lead such great lives ? Maybe, a few. Everything has its own reason and purpose. Everyone of us believe in it. We will know it only when the right time comes !

How I wish and pray that we could all live for others and I also wish that we all could live in harmony and ever lasting peace.

Remember, a knife was invented to cut vegetables and fruits and not to slit someone’s throat or to pierce into someone’s tummy. Similarly, a gun was invented to help man in hunting and for self-defense. The nuclear power was discovered to help mankind and not to drop bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Agreed past is past. But still why don’t we learn from our past and so called history ?

So many wars had been fought for various reasons, they had been won and lost. It atleast left one side suffering with pain of losing dear ones to war, hatred, etc. The amount of manpower and money and resource spent for wars, if the same had been spent for the welfare of man kind, then our world would have been a better place to live in today. Nevertheless, if atleast now we learn it’s not too late.

Also think as a common man, we spend so much money to make our lives comfortable. Yes, we do need comforts in our lives. But many a times we will be wasting our money on purchasing such things which are not really essential to us and we could make without it.

If each one of us saved such money. It need not always be money, it could be anything that we don’t really need and can manage without them. Instead of it keeping it idle in one corner of our house, if we give it to those in need. Then I am sure that we shall not see a beggar or a helpless person around. Just think about it.
Before concluding this chapter, let me stress on the line, It dosen’t matter how long we live, what does matter is how well we live.

Finally, let me sum up the life. Believe in yourself, believe that you too can make the difference, always keep fighting and never give up, smile and spread the smile, as you lose nothing by smiling, and always help those in need….

…….whatsoever goes out from you certainly comes back to you someday…

…..if not to you, atleast to your children when they badly need it someday…
